Custom Decking Solutions for the Tauranga Climate
Building a deck in Tauranga requires more than just good carpentry; it requires an understanding of our unique coastal environment. From the high UV exposure in Bethlehem to the salt spray of Papamoa and the steep sections of Welcome Bay, Klinks builds decks that are engineered to last.
As local deck builders, we don't just "install boards." We provide a full-service experience, navigating Tauranga City Council (TCC) building codes and land covenants to ensure your new outdoor living space is safe, compliant, and maximises value to your property.
Garapa or Vitex Decking
Garapa is a South American hardwood prized for its pale golden colour and low surface temperature in direct sun — making it the smart choice for poolside decks and north-facing areas in Otumoetai and Bethlehem. Vitex, sourced from the Solomon Islands, offers similar durability with a slightly darker tone and excellent resistance to moisture.
Premium Pine (H3.2/H4)
H3.2 treated radiata pine is New Zealand's most widely used decking timber — and for good reason. It's versatile, cost-effective, and performs well across a wide range of applications from simple ground-level platforms to elevated entertaining areas. Properly maintained with a quality oil or stain every two to three years, a pine deck will serve a Tauranga home for decades.
Composite Decking (H3)
Made from recycled wood fibre and plastic, composite decking delivers the look of timber with none of the upkeep. No oiling, no staining, no splinters — just an occasional wash-down. It's 100% waterproof, won't warp through Tauranga's summer heat cycles, and comes in a range of colours and textures. Our hidden clip system ensures a clean, fastener-free finish as standard.
Kwila Decking (H3)
Sourced from Papua New Guinea, Kwila is a dense, high-oil hardwood that's been the go-to choice for New Zealand decks for decades. It's naturally resistant to rot, handles Tauranga's UV and coastal salt air well, and develops a beautiful silver-grey patina if left untreated — or holds a rich reddish-brown with regular oiling.
Navigating TCC Decking Regulations
Many homeowners ask: "Do I need a building consent for my deck?" In Tauranga, you generally don't need consent if you cannot fall more than 1.5 metres from the deck. However, if your deck is over 1.0 metre high, a compliant balustrade is legally required.
Whether you’re building on the flat in Greerton or a raised platform in Ohauiti, we ensure every deck meets NZ Building Code Clause F4 for safety and structural integrity.
Deck Finishing Styles: The Details That Make the Difference
The timber you choose gets most of the attention, but how your deck is finished is what separates a good deck from a great one. Here's what to consider when finalising your design.
Picture Frame Decking
A picture frame deck adds a border of boards running perpendicular to the main decking, creating a clean, defined edge that frames the surface like a work of art. It's one of the most popular finishing requests we get in Tauranga — and for good reason.
The effect is immediately more polished than a standard cut edge. It hides the exposed ends of decking boards, which are the first place moisture and UV damage tend to show up in a coastal climate like ours. That makes a picture frame finish not just a style choice, but a practical one too.
Flush Finish
The flush finish is the clean, contemporary alternative to picture framing. Boards run consistently in one direction from edge to edge, with no border — giving the deck a seamless, modern appearance that suits newer Tauranga homes with sharp lines and minimal landscaping.
It's also the most cost-effective finishing option, which makes it a popular choice for larger decks where budget is a factor without wanting to compromise on material quality.
What kind of deck do you need?
Ground-Level Decks
If you've got a flat section in Papamoa, a compact back yard in Mount Maunganui, or a garden that just needs a hard-wearing outdoor surface, a ground-level deck is probably the first thing you picture.
Raised Decks
A raised deck is any deck that sits more than 400mm above the ground at its highest point. A raised deck turns what would otherwise be an awkward slope into a usable, beautiful outdoor living space.
Multi-Level Decks
Some properties don't lend themselves to a single flat platform. Multi-level decks are the natural solution when a sloped section makes a single-level deck impractical or when you want to create defined outdoor zones.
Floating Decks
A floating deck is a freestanding, ground-level (or near ground-level) deck that isn't attached to the house or any other structure. Its ideal when you want a destination deck rather than an extension.

What is Composite Decking?
Composite decking is a great alternative to traditional timber decking. Composite is a mixture of plastic and wood that has been glued together. It is known for its strong, durable, and long-lasting properties. Every board is the same dimension compared with timber that can warp.
The benefits of using composite decking are that it is a sustainable option due to the recycled plastics used for most brands of composite decking.
It is incredibly easy to maintain. Just a simple wash-off is all it needs at the beginning of the summer season.
The composite that we use has been tested in extreme hot and cold weather conditions. We use a hidden clip system which is solid and secure. Composite decking is available in a range of colours and textures.

In most cases, no. In Tauranga you generally don't need a building consent if the fall from your deck to the ground is no more than 1.5 metres. However, if your deck is over 1.0 metre high, a compliant balustrade is legally required under NZ Building Code Clause F4. If your deck is attached to the house or sits on a complex site, consent requirements can change — we'll advise you on this during your free quote so there are no surprises.

Deck pricing varies depending on size, timber choice, site conditions, and finishing details. As a rough guide, a standard pine deck starts from around $400–$600 per square metre installed, while hardwood options like Kwila or Garapa sit higher, and composite decking varies by brand and finish. Elevated decks, feature patterns, balustrades, and stairs all add to the overall cost. We provide free, no-obligation quotes with full pricing broken down — no hidden costs, ever.

Tauranga's combination of high UV, coastal salt air, and summer heat means timber choice matters more here than in most parts of New Zealand. Hardwoods like Kwila and Garapa hold up exceptionally well in exposed conditions and don't require staining as frequently as pine. Composite decking is the ultimate low-maintenance option if you want to avoid upkeep altogether. For shaded or sheltered decks, premium H3.2 treated pine is a cost-effective and proven performer. We'll recommend the right option for your specific site and budget.

Most residential decks take between two and five days to build once we're on site, depending on size and complexity. Elevated decks, feature stairs, and balustrades add time. The bigger variable is lead time before we start — demand in Tauranga and the Bay of Plenty is high, particularly through spring and summer. We recommend getting your quote in early if you're working toward a deadline like Christmas or a summer event.

Composite decking is made from a mixture of recycled wood fibre and plastic, engineered to look like timber without the maintenance. It won't rot, splinter, stain, or fade, and requires nothing more than an occasional wash-down. It's particularly popular in The Lakes, Pyes Pa, and other newer Tauranga suburbs where low-maintenance living is a priority. The upfront cost is higher than pine, but over a 10–15 year period the savings on oiling, staining, and board replacement make it very competitive. We use a hidden clip system on all composite installs for a clean, fastener-free finish.
